Know Your Diamonds

There are 4 key factors that determine the quality of a diamond - Carat (weight), Colour, Clarity and Cut. The other major factors you should consider are the Shape, the Certification, that comes with it, and whether the diamond is Natural or synthetically created.

Shape: Diamonds come in a variety of shapes. The name is used to describe the diamond's form and the shape it has been cut into.

Diamond Shapes

Cut: Not to be confused with the shape of a diamond, the way the diamond has been cut, its depth, width and uniformity of the facets will determine its brilliance. The better the cut of the diamond, the more light it will reflect.

Colour: Graded from D (absolutely colourless) to Z (yellow tone). The less colour in a diamond the more brilliance and better colour grade.

Clarity: Not to be confused with colour or brilliance. Clarity refers to the type, size and number of imperfections or inclusions in the diamond. The diamonds that are perfectly clear and free from imperfections are the more valuable and sought after.

To determine gemstone quality GIA, DCLA, GSL, HRD and other jewellery valuators use an international detailed system of rules and standards to summarize the number, location size and type of inclusions present in a diamond.

Clarity Scale:

  • FL, IF Diamonds: Flawless, Very rare, beautiful diamonds. Free from inclusions or flaws.
  • VVS1, VVS2 Diamonds: Very, Very Slightly Included: Exceptional quality diamonds. Very difficult to see inclusions under 10x magnification.
  • VS1, VS2 Diamonds: Very Slightly Included: Inclusions are not typically visible to the unaided eye.
  • SI1, SI2 Diamonds: Slightly Included: Inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader under 10x magnification.
  • I1, I2, P1, P2 Diamonds: Included: Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification. Transparency and brilliance may be affected.
  • I3 Diamonds: Included: I3 categorises diamonds with potentially dangerous inclustions that can affect beauty and durability. They are obvious to the unaided eye. The fact that an I3 diamond has stayed together is quite a remarkable feat as in these diamonds durability is jeopardised and beauty is compromised. Every diamond has a quality and these happen to be the lowest.

Carat: Standard unit of a gemstone's weight, measured in metric carats. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams. A carat is divided into points with 1 carat equal to 100 points.

Certification: Guarantees value for money. Independant certification ensures accurate grading of the 4 C's (cut, colour, clarity and carat).

Natural Diamonds: A diamond that is mined and untouched. Not synthetically created.
