"Donny Paterson woke up a few days after the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004 and just knew he had to get on a plane to Sri Lanka. He arrived with little more than his skills from his years in the army. He just happened to meet three other westerners at the airport, all with the same instinct to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. Together they went to the village of Peraliya, which had about 500 of its own dead, as well a further 1500 who were killed as the train in which they were travelling washed through their village. For the next nine months the four of them worked with the local villagers to re-establish basic services and some semblance of order."

The events that followed were remarkable ... a rescue effort, a village saved, an award-winning documentary, red-carpet treatment at film festivals, and, for Donny, a Cannes penthouse stay as guest of actor Sean Penn.
