Created by American businesswoman Ruth Handler (1916-2002), Barbie was launched in March 1959. Since then Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion industry.

For over 50 years children have welcomed Barbie into their playtime. Barbie products include the range of dolls with their clothes and accessories, plus a large range of Barbie branded products such as books, apparel, cosmetics and video games.

The Barbie doll is manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc. who is the world's largest toy company based on revenue. Other popular brands produced by Mattel include Hot Wheels, Matchbox cars and a wide range of board games.
