Motorola began trading as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928, which continued for a couple of years until the company started manufacturing car radios; the name was then changed to Motorola, which is a combination of 'motor' and 'Victrola' (a Victrola was a hugely popular type of phonograph in the early 20th century).

Motorola has been responsible for a number of innovations, including the world's first walkie-talkie, the world's first large-screen portable TV, the Six-Sigma quality improvement process, the world's first two-way pager and the world's first GPRS mobile phone, amongst others.

Motorola is best known for its mobile phone range, including the highly successful and recognisable Razr range.
