Oakley began in 1975, in a Californian garage. The garage’s owner was James Jannard. Jannard created the company when he started to question the limits of industry standards. He wanted to create and design products that worked better and looked better than anything available.

The first Oakley product was a BMX accessory 'The Oakley Grip' which Jannard sold out of the back of his car at motocross events. Followed by number plates, gloves, grips, elbow guards, chin guards, and goggles for the BMX community. Over the next decade Jannard began selling more goggles, with the fist ski goggles sold in 1983.

Oakley, Inc. today is still based in California, with a wide range of products including sunglasses, sports visors and ski goggles. They also make sports watches, clothing, bags, backpacks, sport shoes, prescription glasses, football (American) and hockey eyewear, and other accessories.
