Singer
Following his first sewing machine patent, Isaac Merritt Singer formed I.M.Singer & Co. in 1851 in New York, and within 2 years the company was the leading manufacturer of sewing machines in the US.
1855 saw Singer become the world’s largest sewing company, and a Singer machine was awarded first prize at the World Fair in Paris.
A Singer factory was opened in Scotland in 1883, and the Singer Railway Station, which was built specifically to serve the factory. Singer Railway Station is still in operation to this day.
The Statue of Liberty, given to the US in 1884, is widely believed to have been made in the likeness of Isabella Singer, the company founder’s wife.
Opened in 1908, the Singer Building housed the company’s headquarters for 54 years. It was the tallest building in the world at the time.
Today, Singer produces a range of electronic products, including its core range of sewing machines.
