Tanaka Engineering Works was established in the year 1875, and was Japan's first manufacturer of telegraph equipment.

Hakunetsusha was established in the year 1890, and was Japan's first producer of incandescent electric lamps, and was renamed Toyko Denki (Tokyo Electric) in 1899. These two companies merged in 1939, creating a new company, Tokyo Shibaura Denki, the name officially changing to Toshiba Corporation in 1978.

Toshiba was responsible for several Japanese firsts, including radar, microwave ovens, MRI systems, laptop computers, DVDs etc.

Today, Toshiba is amongst the world's elite in terms of notebook computers and semiconductors, and also has a large presence in the electronics and consumer products markets.
